We can all agree that some serious casualties of lockdown are the kids who haven’t got into school, don’t have ready access to the internet, and have done almost no school work for the last three months. they will be seriously behind, and we should devote time and thought to helping them “catch up.”

But it’s interesting that the only way the government can see of doing this is to pay private tutors. Lots of money, fine, but it can’t go to their existing schools, or to existing qualified teachers. Oh no. It has to go to the best, the proven specialists who charge for their services. Do you think these people have a proven track record in enhancing the attainment of these particular clients? If you had asked the parents of these kids, or the teachers who know them best, to come up with a plan for supporting them, do you think it would look like this? Yet again the answer is, make a deal with a private firm, throw cash, and announce the success. What it will eventually amount to only time will tell, but I wish I were more confident.
