Pets

I know, I know. Somehow it’s not quite right
to favour them, reward their neediness.
There’s no clear gain. It’s simpler to define
the cost, in damaged prey, and revenue,
resources we could otherwise deploy...
But calculations from the bottom line
can’t govern natural beings from the wild
and we indulge their quirks as parents might
forgive the tantrums of a troubled child.
We grant them special status; they enjoy
the lavish tributes they believe are due.
Spoiling’s a guilty pleasure. Scratch the itch,
knowing we make it worse, but nonetheless
that’s what we do. We subsidise the rich.
