I'm becoming an Angela Merkel fan. On the issue of migration in Europe she's consistently worked for some kind of decent, rational solution, while other leaders have been striking poses or offering soundbites. When it comes to the crunch, as it has for her this week, she sticks to her guns, even though it's clear that that will cost her party votes and seats. some things are simply right, even though they may not be popular. Just at the moment large numbers of voters across Europe want to deny that we have any responsibility for those taking refuge from areas we have helped to destabilise. It's difficult to hang on to the old ideals about a shared responsibility for other human beings, but without any posturing or preaching, that's what she's doing. Good for her.
