This has always sounded like a murky story, lots of confusion, very hard to see the clear picture. But I’m worriedthat Tom Watson resigned over it, and reading his detailed interview in The Guardian worries me even more. The charge is that people’s names were used without their knowledge to create fantasy additions to Labour Party membership, to get a particular candidate elected. Watson says that the candidate in question has not even been asked for her side of the story. The official Labour statement goes:

“Throughout this process Ed Miliband acted swiftly and thoroughly to uphold the integrity of the party and would take the same action again. “

This reeks of Blairite self-regard, but fails to address the crucial point. Did they speak to her, or not?
