So I’m reading this thin little column strung down one side of the paper, praising the enlightened environmental policy of Ecuador’s president. The headline goes “Rafael Correa has put humans above capital to create a nation worthy of its animalistic nickname.” Well, good for him, and it’s nice that Ecuador’s national secretary of planning and development should bother to write in to sing his boss’s praises. But then I catch up with a story from two weeks before, entitled “China oil giants bid for Ecuador rainforest”, where it seems that this enlightened government is planning to auction off  three million hectares of pristine rainforest. Maybe not quite the saviour after all.
