You know Today? Radio 4 morning programme, John Humphreys and or James Naughtie putting the world right in their solemn, self-important way? Last Thursday, just for a day, there was a revolution. PJ Harvey was guest editor, and there were two women presenters. I don’t normally listen to Today, but I was alerted to this by a friend’s e-mail, and newspaper coverage of the outraged it produced from Tory MPs and the Daily Mail. Why? all sorts of reasons – stuff about torture, criticisms of the City of London, John Pilger and Danny Dorling. It also had a wonderful poem by Rowan Williams, and the overall feel of a programme that had been thought about with considerable care. If Today was always like that, I’d listen every day. But even just once, this was a treat.
