Who are the UN anyway?

Here we go again. Last year it was housing, this year it’s violence against women. Rashida Manjoo, Un rapporteur investigating violence against women, wants to visit Yarl’s Wood detention centre. Asylum Aid say that this is one of the few places where there is evidence that violence against women has been perpetrated by people working for the state. But the Home Office say that they don’t wish this to be investigated, and on their authority Manjoo was refused entry. Increasingly we must appear to outside observers like some banana republic, steadily throwing away any respect for international standards.
