The headline says “Warsi attacks ‘morally indefensible’stand on Gaza” but it’s much worse than that. This isn’t just a difference of opinion, where she’d like Cameron to be more critical of Israel but he refuses to. Like many MPs, she’s well aware that large numbers of her constituents share a passionate anger about Israel’s current policy on Gaza, to which Cameron seems oblivious. Worse still, she argues that this lack of connection with reality is a deliberate choice on Cameron’s part. Her resignation letter spells it out: “There is however great unease across the Foreign Office amongst both ministers and senior officials, in the way recent decisions are being made.” It was always handy for Cameron to have one Asian Muslim woman in his cabinet, if only as window dressing, but his refusal to take her seriously may well turn out to be expensive.
