Universal disaster

Possibly the least surprising news story of the year. Iain Duncan Smith’s plan for universal credit has been put on hold – until a reasonable enough amount of time has elapsed for people to admit that it was always stupid, was never going to work, and has already consumed millions of pounds which might otherwise have gone to people who need it. This is the member of the cabinet described by George Osborne as follows: “When you hear Iain give a presentation, you realise he isn’t quite up to it.” And this, God help us, is the party who are supposed to be good at saving money.
