The plan was, that this would rationalise housing resources, save wasted space. (Though it was always for people on benefit, never for homeowners, whose wealth frees them from having to consider social reponsibilities.) Now it turns out it’s not doing that. There was never the range of housing to allow people to move to something the government thought was more suitable. No problem. They still defend the tax, on the grounds that it’s saving them money. Fine. Nowhere in any of this calculation is there a glimmer of the social cost, the misery and pressure that’s being exerted on vulnerable families.
