TV desert

The real joy of the Christmas telly schedules is that it lets you get on with some serious viewing. There’s just nothing i want to see being transmitted on TV this week, which provides the ideal opportunity for me to explore Pure Mule, a DVD my son has obtained through unlikely contacts in the media world. It’s about young people in a one-horse Irish town. It’s full of drinking and chatting up, families and friends, All the stuff that the soaps do mechanically – but this is witty, touching and fresh, really well written and acted. Like the big American boxes, this has its own commentaries from the writer and directors, but it is worth that kind of attention – there are things you really need to see again, details that you can easily miss the first time around. I don’t know if it’s generally available, but if you get the chance, see it.
